#13 Top of the World by Sunrise
I have a hard time believing there is a more beautiful view than from the top of a mountain at sunrise. This summer, I continued the pursuit of my goal to climb Colorado’s 14ers, which are peaks that stand more than 14,000 feet tall. With 54 peaks total in CO, I have a long, grueling adventure in front of me! This summer, one of my best friends Rachel and I decided to tackle Mt. Bierstadt, elevation 14,065ft by sunrise. We began our hike right before the clock struck 3am in the pitch black. After being guided by headlamps for a while, we soon noticed the light from the full moon proved sufficient enough to lead us to the top. After about two and a half hours of grueling, one-foot-after-the-other, lungs burning in high altitude climbing, we beat the sun to the top.
When we summited, a golden light began to emerge over the top of nearby peaks, bathing the valley below and illuminating the breathtaking landscape all around us. Every painful step, the lack of sleep, and the exhaustion were more than worth the feeling of looking down on the waking world at 14,000 feet.
